KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 23): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Thursday that the peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia to resolve their long-standing border dispute is expected to be finalised within the next two days and signed during the upcoming 47th Asean Summit.

Anwar said officials from both countries — including the heads of armed forces and foreign ministers — have held several rounds of talks in Malaysia, with the most recent meeting between their defence ministers to finalise the detailed terms of the agreement.

“Should both sides agree within these one or two days, the signing ceremony will be witnessed by me and US President Donald Trump, who also supports this peace initiative,” Anwar said during the prime minister’s question time in the Dewan Rakyat.

Thailand and Cambodia have long been embroiled in border disputes, and tensions over several unsettled boundary areas flared in late July, triggering their worst cross-border clash in more than a decade.

Malaysia, as the current chair of Asean, brokered an initial ceasefire on July 28 that ended the fighting. The meeting was attended by Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.

Earlier, Malaysia confirmed that Trump will arrive in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, Oct 26, to attend the 47th Asean Summit, which will run from Oct 26 to Oct 28. Leaders from all 10 Asean member states and key partners — including China, Japan, Russia and the US — are expected to attend.
