KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 15): The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) and Teraju Bumiputera Corporation have signed a two-year pact to help Bumiputera micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and mid-tier companies improve their fundraising and leadership skills.

This is to facilitate better access to capital market financing.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, the SC and Teraju said a key initiative under the partnership is the launch of the Elevate-Teraju cohort under the SC’s Elevate programme, which focuses on building fundraising readiness and leadership capacity.

The programme will help Bumiputera companies strengthen their business strategy, governance, and financial management to meet the standards expected by investors.

SC chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi said that Bumiputera companies have significant potential to scale, and capital market financing can be an important catalyst for their next phase of growth.

“Through this collaboration with Teraju, we aim to build a stronger pipeline of investment-ready companies that can raise funds, expand their businesses and compete regionally,” he said.

Twenty Bumiputera companies from sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, engineering, and technology have been selected for the inaugural cohort which will strengthen their business strategy, governance and financial management to meet the standards expected by investors.

The collaboration also aligns with the 13th Malaysia Plan’s goals to scale up SMEs and promote regional competitiveness among Bumiputera entrepreneurs.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) also aims to:

  • Build a pipeline of investment-ready Bumiputera companies.
  • Explore co-investment opportunities with private investors.
  • Promote environment, social and governance (ESG) compliance through the SC’s Simplified ESG Disclosure Guide.

The MOU, signed by Mohammad Faiz and Teraju chief executive officer Junady Nawawi, supports the SC’s five-year roadmap (2024-2028), which aims to increase market-based fundraising by MSMEs and mid-tier companies to RM40 billion by 2028.
