KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 10): Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) said the basic Medical and Health Takaful Insurance, which supports the fixed-fee, diagnosis-based hospital payment system called diagnosis-related groups (DRG), will now launch in 2027 instead of 2026. The insurance design will be finished by the end of 2025.

In August 2025, Deputy Health Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni had said it would be introduced in 2026.

The government and industry have set aside RM60 million to speed up health reforms, including DRG, which will also start in 2027 after delays to allow time for testing and preparation.

Originally set for mid-2025, the DRG rollout is now delayed to 2027 to allow time to build the system, finalise cost models, integrate hospital data and run pilot tests.

Additionally, BNM announced an extra RM35 million in matching grants for the iTEKAD social finance programme. iTEKAD will now also focus on creating jobs for vulnerable groups, helping them improve their financial stability. This funding will be matched with donations, zakat, and cash waqf, with more details to come.
