KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 24): MISC Bhd (KL:MISC) and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) have received an approval in principle from classification society Bureau Veritas for their design of the world's first ammonia-fuelled LR2 tanker.

This approval in principle validates the concept's technical feasibility and its alignment with current rules and safety standards, according to a joint statement on Wednesday.

The landmark approval results from a joint development project focused on integrating innovative technologies.

The design centres on a proton exchange membrane fuel cell system powered by ammonia, which is converted to hydrogen via an ammonia cracking system.

A key breakthrough of this collaboration is the application of this technology to provide full-scale propulsion and power for all vessel operations on a large commercial ship, moving beyond the limited, small-scale uses seen previously.

"Together with SHI and Bureau Veritas, we are advancing a solution that will set a new standard for sustainable shipping and inspire greater industry-wide adoption of innovative solutions that will help the maritime industry meet its net-zero ambitions," said MISC president and group chief executive officer Zahid Osman.

SHI chief technical officer Haeki Jang said: "... Our ammonia-fuelled LR2 tanker powered by fuel cell represents a true step forward — delivering zero emissions, meeting future regulations, improving operational efficiency, and offering scalability for wider adoption."

Bureau Veritas executive vice president, industrials and commodities, Matthieu de Tugny said: "We remain fully committed to supporting the development of viable, scalable, and safe alternative fuel solutions that will shape the future of sustainable shipping."
