KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 16): The 71st Parti Se-Islam Malaysia (PAS) Muktamar saw a major shift in direction as delegates unanimously passed a motion from the party’s Youth wing, urging PAS to assume the leadership of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, replacing Bersatu, in preparation for the 16th general election (GE16).
The motion, tabled by PAS Youth representative Muhammad Faizudin Mohd Zai, called for a rejuvenation of the coalition, citing its current lack of direction and public confidence.
“Today, people see Perikatan Nasional as weak, stagnant, and lacking clear focus. This Muktamar is our platform to breathe new life into the coalition, and show the rakyat (people) that we are ready to lead,” Faizudin said during the session.
The motion was supported by Selangor PAS youth chief and PAS Shah Alam representative Mohamed Sukri Omar, who highlighted PAS’ growing political influence through its control of four states and 42 parliamentary seats.
“It’s time for us to stop being mere crew members and become the main captain steering the nation’s political course, God willing,” he said.
The five-day Muktamar began with the Youth and Women’s wings (Sept 11–14) and culminated in the central assembly (Sept 15–16) at the Kedah PAS Complex in Kota Sarang Semut.
Following the 2022 general election, PAS emerged as the largest single party in the Dewan Rakyat, positioning itself as the dominant force within the PN coalition.
Ahmad Fadhli leads in party elections
According to Free Malaysia Today, in the PAS central leadership election, PAS Information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari topped the polls for the 18-member Central Working Committee, receiving 1,096 votes. He was followed closely by Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Nor (1,062 votes), and first-time contender Haim Hilman Abdullah, the Jitra assemblyman, with 1,028 votes.
Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz, who lost his seat in 2021, made a return to the committee. Meanwhile, Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli failed to secure a spot.
According to PAS Election Committee chairman Wan Rohimi Wan Daud, a total of 1,220 out of 1,351 delegates cast their ballots, marking a 90.03% turnout.
Meanwhile uncontested deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man speaking at the Muktamar said PAS will not reveal its prime ministerial candidate for GE16 yet to avoid early personal attacks. He said the party has capable candidates but past experiences have shown the risks of announcing too early.
