(Sept 7): World Bank lead economist for Malaysia Apurva Sanghi has been dabbling in pseudo-mentalist “magic tricks” since his high school days — mind-bending demonstrations rooted in psychology and his unending fascination with human behaviour. A lover of physics, nature, music and art, he has applied his deep-seated curiosity about why we think and act the way we do to his professional framework, working in countries including Thailand, Kenya, Russia and now Malaysia. Sanghi speaks on his approach to economics and climate change, teaching others to question their choices through magic and the greatest lessons he has learned from 25 years at the bank.

Abhilash Chandra remembers James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar as the defining push that made him pursue filmmaking. For the youth who grew up micro-analysing each frame from cinematic classics, the world of filmmaking was a far cry from what his parents envisioned, but hard knocks and disillusion could not put out Chandra’s fiery passion for the silver screen. He reflects on overcoming the obstacles in his directorial journey and his debut movie, Blood Brothers: Bara Naga, a gritty crime saga that tells the tale of loyalty and redemption.
