KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 13): Former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli said his 12-year-old son was stabbed with a syringe in a Putrajaya mall around 1.45pm, in what he believes was a planned attack.

In a statement, Rafizi said a man dragged his son and jabbed him with a syringe as his son and wife were getting into her car to leave a mall in Putrajaya.

CCTV footage showed two men on a motorbike following Rafizi's wife's car. He said the attack was planned, with the men dressed entirely in black and wearing full-face helmets. They waited for the right moment before attacking his son.

Police arrived quickly after the incident and Rafizi and his family have given their statements.

“This is the first time my family has been targeted in such an attack and threat during my career as a politician. I believe it was meant as a warning for me to remain silent on certain issues,” Rafizi's statement read.

“God willing, while I take additional measures to beef up security, I will not bow down to any threat and continue to perform my duty as usual,” he said.

Rafizi said his son is currently being treated at Hospital UPM.

He added that further updates on the case, medical findings and investigation progress should come from the police and Hospital UPM.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution in a separate statement said he spoke with Rafizi about the attack on his son and assured him that the police are investigating the case seriously to find and punish those responsible.

“I must also emphasise that all investigations are conducted fairly and based on the law, without being influenced by anyone’s status or background, in line with the Royal Malaysian Police’s responsibility to ensure safety and justice for all citizens, including children,” he said.

Saifuddin wished Rafizi’s son a quick recovery and strength for the family during this difficult time.
