KUALA LUMPUR (July 31): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Thursday that US President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will attend the 47th Asean Summit in October, following their phone conversation earlier in the morning.

Speaking in Parliament prior to the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), Anwar said the call took place at 6.50am, during which Trump conveyed his appreciation for Malaysia’s role in facilitating the resolution of the Thailand-Cambodia conflict.

“He began by expressing his highest appreciation to Malaysia for having played an effective and commendable role in resolving the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia,” Anwar said.

The prime minister stressed that Malaysia’s contribution was possible due to Asean unity and the constructive stance taken by the two nations involved, as well as the cooperation shown by both the US and China.

Malaysia, as the Asean chair for 2025, helped facilitate ceasefire talks that took place in Putrajaya, which resulted in an agreement to halt five days of deadly border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, effective midnight of July 28.

The violence was rooted in longstanding territorial disputes, particularly near the Preah Vihear temple region, and resulted in over 35 fatalities and the displacement of more than 200,000 civilians on both sides. The ceasefire was backed by both the US and China.
