KUALA LUMPUR (July 21): Malaysia is considering making MyDigital ID registration mandatory amid limited, voluntary sign-ups by the public currently.
The government is looking at the possibility of formulating a specific Act for MyDigital ID, Federal Territories Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa told the Dewan Rakyat on Monday. Only 2.8 million Malaysians have registered for the national digital identity platform at the end of June, she noted.
Zaliha was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran), who raised concerns over public confidence over the function of MyDigital ID.
Kiandee's concerns stemmed from a recent disruption over the weekend at the Johor Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex, which he said was caused by system integration issues — potentially undermining public trust in digital initiatives.
Malaysia already has a growing list of government apps, with the latest being the upcoming launch of MyGOV Malaysia, meant to streamline access to various public services. Other official apps include MySejahtera, the PADU Central Database Hub, MyJPJ, HRMIS Mobile, and MyBorderPass.
MyDigital ID, developed in 2016, is a national digital identification system aimed at providing secure, authenticated identity verification for online transactions across both public and private sectors.
Zaliha reiterated that the platform is designed with biometric, e-KYC (electronic know-your-customer), and cryptographic technologies, and "does not store users’ personal data".
As of July, MyDigital ID has been integrated with 82 digital systems, including 35 fully operational government platforms while 17 are in various stages of implementation and 21 are under discussion.
On the private sector front, seven non-government systems have been integrated, with two more underway.
Zaliha also noted that six local banks have successfully completed sandbox testing under the supervision of Bank Negara Malaysia, signalling "the financial sector’s confidence in adopting secure digital identification solutions".
