KUALA LUMPUR (July 7): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission on Monday filed an application at the Sessions Court, here, to forfeit various currencies of different denominations said to be owned by former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and his political secretary Datuk Mohamad Anuar Mohd Yunus.
Both Ismail, 65, and Anuar, 55, have been named respondents in the notice of application.
The MACC said it filed the application in accordance with Section 41(1) of the MACC Act after it was satisfied that the 10 foreign currencies of various dominations belonged to the both of them and needed to be forfeited under Section 36(1) of the MACC Act when there is no prosecution or conviction, but the court is satisfied that the property has been obtained as a result of an offence under the Act.
It listed the foreign currencies to be forfeited by the Malaysian government as:
- RM14.7 million
- S$6.132 million (RM20.28 million)
- US$1.461 million (RM6.16 million)
- CHF3 million (RM15.92 million)
- €12.164 million (RM60.42 million)
- ¥363 million (RM10.59 million)
- £50,250 (RM289,160)
- NZ$44,600 (RM113,938)
- AED34.75 million (RM39.91 million)
- A$352,850 (RM974,526)
It is understood that the MACC will issue a statement over this.
Section 41(1) of the MACC Act pertains to forfeiture of any movable property where there is no prosecution or conviction secured, while Section 36(1) states that an MACC officer with a rank of commissioner can sanction the forfeiture or seizure.
Prior to this, it was reported that Ismail and several others had been summoned by the MACC several times with regards to a probe over RM700 mil publicity spending.
