KUALA LUMPUR (July 4): SuperSiC (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, a unit of China’s Zhejiang Jingsheng (JSG), held a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday for its new plant at the Penang Technology Park in Bertam, which will help fill a key gap in Malaysia’s semiconductor industry — advanced wafer fabrication.
The 40,000-square-metre facility is part of JSG’s global expansion and is set to start construction within a year.
Once phase one is complete, it will produce 240,000 eight-inch silicon carbide wafers annually. Silicon carbide wafers are used in high-performance electronics like electric vehicle chargers and power systems for telecom base stations.
In a statement, Malaysian Investment Development Authority chief executive officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid said the facility supports Malaysia’s strategic frameworks, including the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, the Chemical Industry Roadmap 2030 and the National Semiconductor Strategy 2030.
“This project will serve as a catalyst, attracting further investments in this crucial sector and strengthening Malaysia's position as Asia's premier advanced manufacturing hub. With SuperSiC's commitment, we're establishing a cornerstone for Malaysia's technological future,” Sikh Shamsul added.
JSG chairman Dr Cao Jianwei said the Penang facility represents a pivotal milestone in its international strategy.
The Penang facility also enables the launch of SuperSiC's localised production layout in the Southeast Asian market and the start of a new chapter of deep collaboration with the local semiconductor industry ecosystem in Malaysia, Cao added.
“This is not only a strengthening of the global supply chain, but also a practical implementation of the commitment to be close to customers and responsive to their needs,” Cao concluded.
Founded in 2006, JSG is listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.
JSG is a global leader in solar equipment and large silicon wafer machines (8-12 inch). It also has advanced technology for growing large sapphire crystals, according to its website.
