PUTRAJAYA (July 2): Two senior lawyers who appeared before Court of Appeal President Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim on his final day of work in the judicial and legal services on Wednesday wished him a happy retirement.
Datuk Dr Cyrus Das commended Abang Iskandar for his services over the years as a judge of the High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court.
“I had the opportunity to appear before Abang Iskandar at the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court. He has shown unfailing courtesy with lawyers appearing before him,” said Das.
Das had earlier represented the Inland Revenue Board during the decision of its appeal against Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) at the Federal Court. The appeal was heard by a five-member bench led by Abang Iskandar.
Meanwhile, Datuk DP Naban, who represented TNB in the matter, said he too had the privilege of appearing before Abang Iskandar at all three courts.
Naban said he and the Malaysian Bar are of the opinion that Abang Iskandar had restored confidence in the judiciary.
“When you come to West Malaysia again, do not forget to visit us here as we honestly will be appreciative of your company,” the senior lawyer said to Abang Iskandar, who hails from Sarawak.
Abang Iskandar will turn 66, the mandatory retirement age for judges, on Thursday.
His retirement comes a day after that of outgoing Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat.
Abang Iskandar was the first person from East Malaysia to hold the post of Court of Appeal president. Before being appointed to the post in 2023, he served as the chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak.
On his last day of work, Abang Iskandar was seen meeting his staff. He also participated in a short photo session with court reporters who bid him farewell and happy retirement.
On Tuesday, Tengku Maimun also bid farewell to her staff and lawyers, who showered her with commendation.
