SEPANG (June 24): Grab Malaysia has launched its first fleet of electric vehicles (EVs), in its bid to decarbonise, promote EV adoption and contribute towards Malaysia’s net-zero aspirations.

The fleet, comprising 10 BYD M6s, will be wholly dedicated for passengers travelling from KLIA, according to Grab’s statement on Tuesday.

The service is available for booking through the Grap app. Based on a check by The Edge, a ride from KLIA Terminal 1 to KL Sentral through a standard six-seater would cost RM105, while the same via an EV six-seater costs RM134 at the time of writing.  

The move is powered by Grab’s collaboration with BYD Sime Motors — the official distributor of BYD cars in Malaysia, Yinson Holdings Bhd’s (KL:YINSON) wholly owned green technology unit Yinson Green Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd (Yinson GreenTech), and Singapore-based EV charging services provider Power-Up Tech Pte Ltd.

Grab Malaysia director of country operations and mobility Rashid Shukor said that the company is looking to promote EV adoption in Malaysia, as part of its commitment to support national sustainability goals.

“We are proud to support Malaysia’s green mobility push with the introduction of an EV-only ride option for airport travellers. By prioritising routes with high visibility and demand such as KLIA, we aim to demonstrate the practicality and comfort of EVs, while driving greater awareness among consumers,” Rashid said.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said he welcomes private-sector efforts to create eco-friendly solutions, and hopes these partnerships will boost public trust in EVs.
