KUALA LUMPUR (June 24): AirAsia on Tuesday came out in support of the merger of Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom), saying it will unify Malaysia’s aviation regulatory framework and strengthen the aviation sector.

In a statement, AirAsia said it hopes for better air traffic control and operations, especially at Terminal 2 of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, to keep air travel smooth and affordable.

The airline said it believes combining roles like safety, airspace management, consumer protection, and economic regulation will help create a clearer, more efficient system that follows global standards and supports Malaysia’s goal to become a leading aviation hub.

”AirAsia welcomes the vision of a single aviation regulator system. Bringing key regulatory functions under one independent statutory body will further streamline processes, provide clearer engagement for industry players, drive greater efficiency across the aviation ecosystem, and benefit travellers through improved connectivity and service.”  The group chief executive officer of AirAsia Aviation Group, Bo Lingam, said in the statement.

He added that the budget airline aims to support Malaysia's position as a regional aviation hub by working with the government and the CAAM to boost efficiency, international connectivity, and innovation.

AirAsia handles around 500 daily departures and 75,000 passengers nationwide.
