KUALA LUMPUR (May 29): Perak plans to build a big sea terminal, creating a halal and artificial intelligence (AI) industry hub, and improving food security in its bid to become a key economic centre.

At the Asean Summit 2025, the state through Perak State Development Corporation (PKNPk) signed two deals with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government and CHEC Construction Sdn Bhd. The focus is on three main areas: developing the Bagan Datuk International Sea-Hub Multipurpose Terminal (BDI-SMT), setting up a halal and AI industrial hub, and partnering on food security.

In a statement, PKNPk said the memorandum of understanding with the UAE government sets a plan to work together on sustainable food security and smart investments linked to the BDI-SMT project. This includes exploring new farming technologies, improving regional trade and strengthening supply chains.

The agreement with CHEC Construction, a global infrastructure company, plans to develop the BDI-SMT as a major trade hub connecting China, Asean and Gulf Cooperation Council countries. It also includes creating a halal and AI industrial hub in Perak to boost ethical manufacturing, digital industries and new economic growth.

Perak Corporation Bhd (KL:PRKCORP) will lead the BDI-SMT development, supporting Perak’s goal to grow its Lumut Maritime Industrial City, focusing on maritime, logistics and industry. This project aligns with national goals and will boost Malaysia’s economy and infrastructure.

PKNPk chief executive officer Datuk Redza Rafiq highlighted that these commercially driven partnerships will create jobs, stimulate industry and boost infrastructure while attracting foreign direct investment, particularly from China and the UAE. The BDI-SMT is set to become a key maritime trade hub in Asia, with added focus on halal manufacturing and digital industry growth.

PKNPk also said the strategic alliances signal Perak’s readiness not only to embrace future economic trends but also to actively shape them, driving a new era of growth that is globally connected and sustainably developed.
