AS the accountancy profession braces for unprecedented disruption — from climate imperatives to artificial intelligence (AI) integration — the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) is marking a milestone moment. The upcoming 40th edition of its flagship event, the MIA International Accountants Conference 2025, presents the opportunity for a timely reflection on the evolution of the profession and a bold step into its collective future.

Scheduled to take place in a hybrid format starting Monday (May 26), the two-day event is expected to convene over 3,000 delegates from Malaysia and beyond. With 80 high-level speakers lined up — including ministers, regulators and global standard-setters — the conference seeks to address a profession in transition, where accountants of today are called to lead not only with numbers, but also with purpose, collaboration and ethical resilience. “As we celebrate the 40th edition of the MIA Conference, we reflect on how far we have come and where we are strategically heading in fulfilling our roles and responsibilities in developing the accountancy profession,” says G Shanmugam, acting CEO of MIA cum conference director.

“This year’s theme, Collaborative Leadership for a Sustainable Future, underlines our commitment in building a future-ready and adaptable profession that leads with integrity, resilience and purpose.”

While past generations of accountants may have excelled through precision and compliance, today’s accounting professionals are being asked to help shape public policy, drive digital transformation and align capital with sustainable outcomes.

This year’s conference sessions mirror these growing expectations. Four key plenary sessions and 12 concurrent sessions will explore wide-ranging issues — from environmental, social and governance (ESG) integration to Asean’s macroeconomic outlook — reflecting the multi-disciplinary realities confronting accountants today.

The opening keynote will be delivered by Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, reinforcing the profession’s close interface with public policy. On the second day, Jean Bouquot, president of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), will address delegates on the conference’s theme “Collaborative Leadership for a Sustainable Future” from a global perspective.

“This conference is a platform to spark discussions, enable upskilling, enhance partnerships, and drive collective progress for Malaysia, Asean and beyond.”

The opening plenary session — Collaborative Leadership for a Progressive Asean: An Economic & Financial Perspective — will explore how Southeast Asia can position itself as a cohesive economic force amid growing geopolitical uncertainty, underscoring the region’s potential to strengthen integration and resilience through strategic collaboration.

With Malaysia assuming the Asean chair for 2025, the session will consider how accountants can contribute beyond financial stewardship by supporting cross-border initiatives like the Asean Energy Grid, bolstering regional trade ecosystem and bridging socio-economic gaps through digital tools.

“Accountants can play a critical role in fostering regional collaboration, supporting renewables and driving digital transformation,” says Shanmugam. “This is about redefining our contribution at the systems level.”

With AI  fast reshaping business functions, accountants are being nudged to move from transactional roles to become proactive strategists. The second plenary session — From Co-Pilot to Strategic Catalyst — will focus on this transition.

Organised in partnership with American Institute of Certified Public Accountants-Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (AICPA-CIMA), the session explores how management accountants are leveraging AI to enhance decision-making, integrating ESG frameworks and adapting to emerging financial ecosystems.

Meanwhile, Plenary 3 titled “Innovating for Tomorrow: Future-proofing Enterprises with Business Model Evolution and Digital Transformation” will be moderated by Barry C Melancon, former CEO of AICPA. The session seeks to unpack how chief financial officers and financial leaders can recalibrate their business models and operations to stay competitive in volatile markets.

“Accountants are no longer just the backroom experts,” says Shanmugam. “They are at the table, influencing decisions, shaping strategies and safeguarding the public interest.”

While technical sessions remain the backbone of the conference, the broader message is that the future of accountancy lies in collaboration, ethical leadership and long-term value creation.

The conference also signals MIA’s alignment with Malaysia’s broader economic diplomacy and sustainability agenda. In keeping with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 17 — Partnerships for the Goals — the event is designed to foster domestic, regional and international networks.

The institute’s recent win of the HRD Corp Human Resources Minister Award 2024 further reinforces its role in professional development. With nearly 1,000 programmes conducted in 2024 alone, MIA continues to position itself as a critical enabler in building talent for national progress.

Four decades on, the MIA Conference is no longer seen as just an annual event — it is an evolving platform for navigating the changing terrain of finance, regulation and corporate responsibility.

As the accounting profession finds itself at the nexus of sustainability, digitalisation and regional integration, the conference is expected to serve both as a compass and a call to action for participants.
