JOHOR BAHRU (May 23): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Friday defended the decision to extend the contract of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, hailing his bravery in leading a crackdown on prominent figures involved in corruption.

Speaking at the PKR national congress, Anwar acknowledged concerns about Azam’s reappointment, but maintained that Azam had demonstrated rare bravery in tackling high-level corruption.

“This is the first time the anti-graft body has dared to go after the tauke besar (big bosses) since its establishment 30 years ago.

“I can replace him tomorrow if needed — but I’m not sure the next person will be as brave. Let’s give him room until we find someone even braver. But in the meantime, let’s give him our full support,” Anwar said.

The prime minister stressed that the MACC’s efforts now target high-profile individuals, including those with honorific titles. He said sustaining such momentum requires political will and public backing.

However, he criticised detractors who label the MACC’s actions as politically motivated, even in the absence of public support for its bold initiatives.

“I cannot accept this. There’s no support, and when action is taken, they call it a vendetta,” he said.

On May 9, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar announced that the King of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim, had granted consent for Azam’s reappointment.

Azam’s contract has been extended for one year, from May 13, 2025, to May 12, 2026.

This marks Azam Baki’s third extension since he assumed office on March 9, 2020, succeeding Latheefa Koya.
