KUALA LUMPUR (May 15): Proton is offering RM2,000 to buyers who trade in ‘unroadworthy’ vehicles over 15 years old for new Proton models under a new programme that will run until the end of the year.
In a statement on Thursday, it said it will offer RM2,000 in overtrade support — discount or financial assistance — for the registration of a new Proton vehicle, including the Proton e.MAS 7, Malaysia's top-selling electric vehicle (EV).
Proton has budgeted RM4.8 million for the pilot programme.
To get the incentive, vehicles must be at least 15 years old and too costly to repair for safe use. Eligible types include sedans, MPVs, vans, 4x4s, lorries, and buses, with proof of ownership required.
To receive the RM2,000 overtrade incentive, buyers must register a new Proton, including its EV Proton e.MAS, before the end of the year. Owners must also provide:
Car Medic, an authorised auto disposal provider, will handle digital deregistration, towing, and documentation.
Proton said the goal is to make safer and greener vehicles accessible, supporting Malaysia’s target to become carbon neutral by 2050. The company is also preparing to launch its second EV model soon.
The programme was launched at the Proton Centre of Excellence in Subang Jaya, with Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook officiating. Proton was represented by chairman Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar and chief executive officer Dr Li Chunrong.
Representatives from Car Medic, the Ministry of Transport, JPJ, Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, and Malaysian Automotive Robotics & IoT Institute were also present.
“The Ministry of Transport supports the XChange Programme initiative and encourages more original equipment manufacturers to follow Proton’s example and look beyond chasing sales and profits. Malaysia’s first automotive company has once again become an agent of change for the automotive industry and is leading by example,” Loke said in his speech during the event.
