KUALA LUMPUR (May 13): Shares of Inari Amertron Bhd (KL:INARI) surged to a nearly three-month high in early trade, following continued growth in global semiconductor sales and optimism, and potential easing of US chip export controls, which could benefit Malaysia.

At 9.30am on Tuesday, the stock had jumped 33 sen or 17% to RM2.27, giving the group a market capitalisation of RM8.6 billion, with 22.2 million shares traded — more than double its average volume — making it the most actively traded stock in early trade.

According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, global semiconductor sales in March 2025 rose to US$55.9 billion (RM242.4 billion), up 1.8% month-on-month and 18.8% year-on-year, marking the 17th consecutive month of annual growth.

SEMI noted that market revenue of global semiconductor materials increased 3.8% year-on-year to US$67.5 billion in 2024, driven by high demand for advanced materials in high-performance computing.

In a note on Tuesday, TA Securities reiterates its 'overweight' stance on the semiconductor sector, but warned of US policy risks that may weigh on economic growth and disrupt supply chains.

It viewed the Trump's administration plan to revise Biden-era restrictions on exporting advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chips positively.

"Overall, we view this development positively, as it could provide Malaysia with greater access to advanced technologies, particularly in key industries such as data centres. In addition, the potential relaxation of export controls may attract more foreign investment and partnerships, further strengthening Malaysia's position in the global semiconductor supply chain," it added.

TA Securities also cited the government's announcement of the criteria for local companies to participate in the advanced chip design framework in collaboration with UK-based Arm Holdings plc.

"We also view this latest development positively, as it brings us one step closer to helping local companies move up the value chain in the global semiconductor industry. "

The research house has 'buy' recommendations on Inari (target price: RM3.10), Unisem (M) Bhd (KL:UNISEM) with a target price of RM2.35, Malaysian Pacific Industries Bhd (KL:MPI) with a target price of RM29.30, and Elsoft Research Bhd (KL:ELSOFT) with a target price of 52 sen.
