KUALA LUMPUR (May 9): Oryx Stainless Group, a company from the Netherlands that supplies recycled materials used to make stainless steel, has opened a new factory — its fifth one worldwide — in Johor. The 25,000m² plant can process 150,000 tonnes of recycled stainless steel each year.

The Johor plant joins its other facilities in the Netherlands, Thailand, Germany, and Spain, according to a statement.

The facility supports Malaysia’s goal to reduce carbon intensity by 45% by 2030. For every tonne of recycled material processed, up to 8.5 tonnes of CO2 can be saved — reportedly cutting almost one million tonnes of emissions annually.

The plant is part of Malaysia’s push to attract RM300 billion in green investments. It mainly hires local workers, and plans to double its workforce by mid-2026. It also partners with local universities to help students enter the green tech sector.

Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) chief executive officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim said the agency supports investments that are innovative, eco-friendly, and create high-skill jobs.

“Malaysia is key to our strategy of bringing high-quality, low carbon footprint stainless steel raw materials closer to the production centres of Asia,” said Oryx Stainless Holding CEO Tobias Kämmer.

“Our investment in Johor is not only a business decision — it is a commitment to long-term collaboration, green growth, and shared prosperity. We are proud to contribute to Malaysia’s vision of becoming a global leader in sustainable industrial transformation,” he added.
