KUALA LUMPUR (April 30): Malayan Banking Bhd (KL:MAYBANK) has appointed Shafiq Abdul Jabbar as group chief financial officer (CFO), effective July 7, 2025, confirming a report by The Edge.

Shafiq will join Maybank after completing his notice period at AMMB Holdings Bhd (KL:AMBANK), where he stepped down as group CFO on April 9. He is currently on garden leave until July 1.

Prior to his time at AMMB, he was group CFO of pay-TV provider Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd (KL:ASTRO). He has also served as the group financial controller and CFO of CIMB Bank Bhd.

“With over 25 years of experience, Shafiq brings broad leadership and diverse expertise from senior roles in banking, media and professional services,” Maybank said in a statement on Wednesday.

Commenting on the appointment, Maybank president and group chief executive officer Datuk Khairussaleh Ramli said Shafiq’s strong financial leadership and experience across various industries will be key in supporting the banking group’s strategy for sustainable growth and value creation.

“The group offers our congratulations to Shafiq as he joins our management team under my leadership, to drive Maybank forward towards being the most positive impactful financial institution,” he added.

The appointment comes two months after the unexpected and immediate departure of Maybank’s group CFO Khalijah Ismail. In a stock exchange filing on Feb 17, it said her departure followed “an internal inquiry by the bank”, but did not elaborate.

The Edge reported that Khalijah has filed a wrongful dismissal complaint with the Industrial Court.

Shares in Maybank ended four sen or 0.4% higher at RM9.99, valuing the bank at RM120.69 billion.
