KUALA LUMPUR (April 24): Datuk Muzaffar Hisham has resigned from his position as Malayan Banking Bhd’s (KL:MAYBANK) group chief executive officer of Islamic banking to helm Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd (BPMB), according to sources.

Maybank announced his departure on Thursday, which came just over one year since his appointment on March 1, 2024.

With his departure, Maybank has appointed Nor Shahrizan Sulaiman as its officer-in-charge of Maybank Islamic Bhd.

Nor Shahrizan currently serves as deputy CEO of Maybank Islamic, and is also head of community banking in the organisation.

BPMB is currently led by interim group CEO Mohamed Nazri Omar, following the exit of Roni Abdul Wahab this year. Roni, who previously served in Khazanah Nasional Bhd and HSBC Bank Bhd, held the top job for three years from April 8, 2022.

Current Maybank Islamic deputy CEO Nor Shahrizan Sulaiman will be officer-in-charge of Maybank Islamic Bhd following the resignation of CEO Datuk Muzaffar Hisham.

“On behalf of Maybank Group, I extend my deepest gratitude to Datuk Muzaffar for his invaluable contributions over the past 14 years,” said Maybank president and group CEO Datuk Khairussaleh Ramli.

“He has played a pivotal role in steering our Islamic banking franchise towards achieving true global leadership, in line with our M25+ strategy,” Khairussaleh said.

Maybank Group has seen a slew of top leadership changes in 2024 and 2025. Muzaffar’s appointment as Maybank Islamic CEO in 2024 itself follows the exit of Datuk Mohamed Rafique, who retired in June last year.

In February, Maybank’s group chief financial officer Khalijah Ismail departed from the group following an internal inquiry.
