KUALA LUMPUR (April 15): The restoration of gas supply in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya — where a massive blaze took place two weeks ago after a pipeline leak — is currently estimated to take place no earlier than July 1, said Petronas Gas Bhd (KL:PETGAS).
The restoration timeline remains subject to the outcome of ongoing investigations, regulatory approvals, and actual progress at the site, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
Petronas Gas added that it is also working closely with stakeholders, including authorities, gas shippers, and gas distributors, to restore gas services in the affected areas.
This includes improving gas supply capacity from the north to other sectors of the Klang Valley, such as Bestari Jaya, Meru, and Kapar, through alternative supply from the Trans Thailand-Malaysia gas pipeline system.
Meanwhile, the Serdang City Gate station has resumed operations, resulting in more stable supply access to the Klang Valley area, the company added.
The explosion and fire on April 1, involving Petronas Gas’ main gas pipeline, affected 1,254 people from 308 families. The incident resulted in 87 houses being completely destroyed and 148 others needing repairs.
MIDF Research has previously estimated the potential financial impact on Petronas Gas to be between RM18 million and RM25 million. This figure includes projected revenue loss (10%-15%) from the disrupted pipeline, repair costs (25%-30%), public compensation (25%-35%), and expenses related to reputational management.
In its latest statement, Petronas Gas said it is fully cooperating with the authorities on the investigation and repair work, which includes soil stabilisation, water control, and pipeline excavation.
"Petronas Gas will continue to work with regulators and relevant authorities to further stabilise access to gas supply while safely carrying out remedial efforts and supporting the investigation," the company said.
Shares in Petronas Gas gained 10 sen or 0.6% to close at RM16.32 on Tuesday, giving the company a market value of RM32.3 billion.
