KUALA LUMPUR (April 4): The government has yet to decide whether to extend Tan Sri Azam Baki’s term as the head of Malaysia's anti-graft agency, Bernama reported on Friday, citing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“I will announce when there is a decision,” Anwar was quoted as saying by the national news agency. Azam's term is still ongoing, and a decision will be made closer to the end, the PM was reported as saying.

The comment follows a Bloomberg report that said Azam’s contract as the chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is set to be extended by six months at the end of his term.

Citing unidentified sources, Bloomberg said an announcement is likely to be made in early May though the plan may change.

Azam, who turns 62 in May, has already had his term extended by one year twice and is the first MACC chief commissioner to have his term extended beyond the mandatory retirement age of 60. He was first appointed to the post in May 2023.

Under Malaysian law, the position of MACC chief commissioner is appointed by the King on the advice of the prime minister.
