A weekly round-up of tanker and dry bulk market (March 14, 2025)

Capesize

The Capesize Timecharter Average (C5TC) experienced a decline of US$1,507 week-on-week, settling at US$22,190 on Friday. In the North Atlantic, a few INL breaching fronthaul cargoes with mid-April loading were fixed, reflecting US$42,313 on the C9 route by the end of the week. In Brazil, rates started to improve since mid-week after more cargoes entered the market with second half April dates. There was talk of a tight ballaster list with end-April arrival dates. The C3 route ended the week by increasing US$0.405, reaching US$24.485. In the Pacific, the C5 laycan window has fully shifted to April dates. However, it was a rather slow week overall as miners remained absent from the market for various reasons for a few days within the week. The C5 route was marked at US$9.35.

Panamax

Overall, a week of slow erosion for the Panamax market. This is despite some resistance and a limited push on FFAs. Again, the North Atlantic returned a distinct lack of demand, this continued to undermine the market here and there were few deals of note. Activity ex North America still applied some uncertainty in some quarters, but spreads settled down a little this week as the market awaits definitive news. An 82,000dwt achieved US$17,000 for a trip via NC South America redelivery Singapore-Japan. Trade ex-South America returned an active week, varying rates were witnessed for fronthaul trips, for index dates the mean average returned around US$12,000/$12,500 levels. Asia returned a mixed week with varying degrees of rates fixed for the longer round trips. Rates ranging from US$12,500 to US$15,500 for nice grain clean types ex NoPac. There was limited period activity, although the highlight a nicely described 82,000dwt delivery China achieving US$17,000 for three to five months period.

Ultramax/Supramax

Overall, a week of slightly positive gains was seen for the sector. The US Gulf did see positive moves at the beginning of the week although some said it may a peaked for the time being. The South Atlantic remained finely balanced whilst the Mediterranean – Continent lacked fresh impetus. A 61,000dwt fixing a trip from the Baltic to West Africa at US$14,000. Whilst a 63,000dwt fixed delivery West Africa for a trip via South Africa to the Far east at US$15,500. The Asian arena saw stronger levels with better demand helping the owners side. The Indonesian market remand active, a 64,000dwt fixing from here redelivery WC India at US$17,000 option redelivery EC India at US$18,000. Whilst for trip to China a 58,000dwt was heard fixed in the mid US$15,000s. Demand seem to wane a little further north, although a 63,000dwt open China fixed a NoPac round at close to US$15,000. The Indian Ocean saw increased activity, a 61,000dwt fixing delivery Port Elizabeth for trip to China at US$15,000 plus US$150,000 ballast bonus. Period activity remained in play, a 60,000dwt open Japan fixing 7/9 months trading redelivery worldwide at US$14,000.

Handysize

This week, the market saw minimal visible activity across both basins. Rates appeared supported in the Continent and Mediterranean, with sentiment remaining generally positional. A 33,000dwt open Iskenderun 20/21 March was placed on subjects for delivery Canakkale trip with grains to redelivery USA at US$9,250. In the US Gulf, sentiment stayed subdued, with the tonnage count maintaining its length and putting further downward pressure on rates. The South Atlantic market fundamentals remained balanced, particularly for larger sizes. A 40,000dwt vessel was fixed for delivery at Recalada redelivering to the US East Coast at US$16,000. In Asia, some sources noted a slight increase in the tonnage count, but decent cargo volumes have helped keep rates at healthy levels. A 33,000dwt vessel was fixed for delivery in Singapore, via Gladstone, redelivering to Samalaju with alumina at US$10,500.

Clean

LR2

MEG LR2’s looked to have reached the top for their current freight spike for the moment. The TC1 75kt MEG/Japan index reached WS166.94 where is paused and is now at WS164.17. A TC20 90kt MEG/UK-Continent assessment climbed to US$4.225 million then dipped back to US$4.2 million where it presently rests.

West of Suez, Mediterranean/East LR2’s of TC15 also lost steam and went from US$3.21 million to US$3.04 million.

LR1

MEG LR1 freight climbed again this week. The TC5 55kt MEG/Japan index has come up another 9.06 points to WS180.94. A voyage west on TC8 65kt MEG/UK-Continent went from US$3.12 million to US$3.33 million.

On the UK- Continent LR1’s held stable with the TC16 60Kt ARA/West Africa index hovering around WS112.5 all week.

MR

After stability last week MRs in the MEG shot up over the last 5 days, the TC17 35kt MEG/East Africa index jumped 42.15 points to WS262.86 as a result.

UK-Continent MR freight levels strengthened again this week. The TC2 37kt ARA/US-Atlantic coast trip added 15.94 points to its value taking the index to WS172.5. This moved the Baltic description round trip TCE for the run to US$21,004 /day. The TC19 run of 37kt ARA/West Africa also climbed 16.57 points to WS193.13.

After a couple of weeks in the doldrums USG MRs showed some movement this week. The TC14 38kt US-Gulf/UK-Continent subsequently went from WS90 to WS121.79. The TC18 the 38kt US Gulf/Brazil index also went up 35 points to WS175.71 and a Caribbean run on TC21, 38kt US-Gulf/Caribbean improved again by 40% to US$617,857.

The MR Atlantic Triangulation Basket TCE went from US$20,240 to US$27,847.

Handymax

Baltic Clean Handymax routes had a second positive week in a row. In the Mediterranean, the TC6 index jumped 72.22 points to WS268.33 and on the UK-Continent the TC23 30kt Cross UK-Continent rose 10.83 points back over WS200 to WS207.5.

VLCC

The market climbed early in the week but by close of play on Thursday rates were being nudged back down. The 270,000mt Middle East Gulf to China trip (TD3C) is 10 points up since last Friday at WS58.75 corresponding to a round-trip TCE of US$51,536. In the Atlantic market, the rate for 260,000mt West Africa/China (TD15) is 6.5 points firmer week-on-week at WS66.75 giving a round voyage TCE of US$49,598 per day. The rate for 270,000mt US Gulf/China (TD22) increased by US$455,000 since last Friday at US$7,797,500 which shows a daily round trip TCE of US$40,321.

Suezmax

Suezmax rates have taken a bit of a hit this week, especially in West Africa. The rate for the 130,000mt Nigeria/UK Continent voyage (TD20) fell back seven points to WS95.56 meaning a daily round-trip TCE of US$40,980 while the TD27 route (Guyana to UK Continent basis 130,000mt) eased a point to WS95 translating to a daily round trip TCE of US$40,451 basis discharge in Rotterdam. For the TD6 route of 135,000mt CPC/Med the rate has slipped two points week-on-week to WS129.25 showing a daily TCE of a US$62,910 round-trip. In the Middle East, the rate for the TD23 route of 140,000mt Middle East Gulf to the Mediterranean (via the Suez Canal) remains around the WS92.5-93 level.

Aframax

In the North Sea, the rate for the 80,000mt Cross-UK Continent route (TD7) remained flat at WS107.5 giving a daily round-trip TCE of a shade under US$25,500 basis Hound Point to Wilhelmshaven.

In the Mediterranean market the rate for 80,000mt Cross-Mediterranean (TD19) has regained five points to WS120.61 (basis Ceyhan to Lavera, that shows a daily round trip TCE of about US$29,000).

Across the Atlantic, the market recovered slightly with the rates for the 70,000mt East Coast Mexico/US Gulf route (TD26) and the 70,000 mt Covenas/US Gulf route (TD9) gaining 7-7.5 points WS135.83 (showing a daily round-trip TCE of US$26,577) and WS132.81 (a round-trip TCE of US$25,166 per day), respectively.

The rate for the trans-Atlantic route of 70,000mt US Gulf/UK Continent (TD25) is up by 12.5 points at WS145.56 giving a round trip TCE basis Houston/Rotterdam of US$34,697 per day.

LNG

The LNG market continued trending upwards this week, with gains made in both the Pacific and Atlantic Basins, and as well as gains seen on the longer term timecharter markets.

On the BLNG1 Gladstone–Tokyo route, 174k cbm vessels saw an increase of US$7,100, reaching US$27,900 per day. 160k cbm vessels gained US$6,200 settling at US$18,400 per day.

In the Atlantic, the BLNG2 Sabine–UK Continent route experienced gains, with 174k cbm vessels increasing by another US$4,600 to US$30,200 per day, indicating continuing stronger sentiment European demand. Similarly, 160k cbm vessels rose by US$1,400, reaching US$15,200 per day today.

The BLNG3 Sabine–Tokyo route also saw positive momentum on the back of the trans-Atlantic runs, with 174k cbm vessels climbing by US$6,750 to US$34,450 per day, while 160k cbm vessels again gained US$1,800, reaching US$17,200 per day.

Meanwhile, the time charter market showed upward mobility, with six-month rates gaining US$11,350 to US$28,500 per day, while 12-month rates were pushed up by US$6,425 to US$30,000 per day, and three-year rates, in a similar vein, up by US$5,300 to US$53,500 per day.

LPG

There has been a certain upturn in rates in the VLGC sector this week with April fixing is reported as firm. In the MEG for BLPG1 Ras Tanura-Chiba a climb of US$6.828 gave a final Baltic assessment price of US$60.333. At this level, the daily Baltic TCE earning equivalent is at US$44,325 (+US$7,538) which is a 20% increase on this time last week.

The Atlantic market has also climbed at the back end of the week. For BLPG2 Houston-Flushing, the index closed at US$55.625 up a modest US$2.125 from where it opened this week and a daily TCE earning of US$54,943. The BLPG3 Houston-Chiba ticked up US$4.084 to a close of US$108.917 and a TCE earning of US$42,256.
