KUALA LUMPUR (March 23): Celebrity chef Norzaini Abd Hamid (fondly known as Aunty Aini) is most remembered for her appearance on Gordon Ramsay’s travelogue foodie series, Gordon’s Great Escape, where she taught the British chef a traditional beef rendang recipe and famously told him off: “Be patient” and “Don’t burn my food!” at her home-based restaurant Aunty Aini’s Garden Cafe in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.

This matriarch from Suku Biduanda admits to being a picky eater, and opening a restaurant specialising in cuisine from her birth state with a cook-to-order approach allows her to meet like-minded customers who appreciate indulging in food prepared using traditional recipes and techniques.

After 20 years since the business was established, her eldest daughter Merlissa Zainal Osman has brought the taste of Negeri Sembilan to Kuala Lumpur with a pop-up at DC Mall in Bukit Damansara. The mother-daughter duo talks about setting up the restaurant and preserving family legacy in the cover story of Options this week.
