KUALA LUMPUR (March 7): Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Ltd (SSPC), a subsidiary of Shell plc, has begun oil production from Phase 4 of the Gumusut-Kakap-Geronggong-Jagus East (GKGJE) deepwater offshore project.

The production is directed to the Gumusut-Kakap Semi-submersible Floating Production System off Sabah.

Located in water depths of 1,200 metres, Gumusut-Kakap was the first deepwater project for Shell in Malaysia and began production in 2014.

The project includes a subsea tie-back across the Malaysia-Brunei maritime border with three producer wells and one water injection well.

This milestone supports Shell’s global strategy to bring new upstream projects online, aiming to add 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day at peak production.

In March 2021, the National Unitisation Secretariat of Brunei and Petronas signed an agreement to unitise — consolidating multiple smaller units into a larger unit for improved efficiency — the GKGJE fields' oil and gas discoveries across the Malaysia-Brunei border, with SSPC appointed as the unit operator.

The GKGJE project is a joint venture with several partners, including Petronas, ConocoPhillips, and PTTEP Sabah Oil Ltd.
