KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 27): Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has entered into a partnership with UK-based Energy Institute (EI), becoming the first Southeast Asia-headquartered company to join the professional membership body as a technical partner.
The agreement was recently formalised during the International Energy Week (IEW) in London.
The parties entered a partnership agreement during a signing ceremony attended by Petronas senior vice president of project delivery and technology Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof; Petronas senior general manager of strategy and corporate services, project delivery and technology Abang Jimmy Abang Mordian; EI chief executive officer Dr Nick Wayth, and EI technical director Martin Maeso.
In a statement on Thursday, Mohd Yusri said that in line with Petronas’ efforts to build innovation ecosystems that support net zero ambitions in Asia, its collaboration with the EI combines its expertise, resources, and commitment to drive progress towards a sustainable and resilient energy future.
“Achieving net zero in Asia is critical to the global goal, and through this partnership, we aim to empower the region’s energy sector with the knowledge and networks needed for an equitable and responsible transition,” he said.
Dr Nick Wayth said EI is focused on supporting a fair global transition to net zero, and acknowledged Petronas’ role as its newest technical partner in this initiative.
“This new partnership is central to the EI’s future activities supporting and equipping the energy sector in Malaysia, in the wider Asia-Pacific region, and globally,” he said.
Petronas said the partnership underscores its commitment to advancing the energy transition in Asia, and that collaboration is key to driving progress in commercialising emission-reduction technologies, infrastructure development, transition financing, and upskilling talent for an inclusive energy transition.
The national oil and gas company added that it will help shape future programmes through its seat on the Energy Institute Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (EI-STAC), a committee within EI that guides industry standards and technological advancements.
The partnership will focus on three key pillars: promoting decarbonisation and operational excellence through innovation, supporting informed decision-making with expert advice on policy and societal impact, and developing the next generation of energy professionals to help the sector adapt to rapid changes.
“Aligned with global sustainability goals, Petronas and EI are poised to co-generate sustainable energy solutions, while addressing the critical opportunities and challenges posed by the energy transition,” Petronas said.
