KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 3): His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has welcomed the federal government’s subsidy reform approach aimed at ending blanket subsidies to strengthen the country’s financial position.
In his opening speech in Parliament on Monday, Sultan Ibrahim expressed gratitude for the nation’s economic progress, including improvements in the domestic economy and national investment, the appreciation of the ringgit’s value, and the low unemployment rate.
“Last year, gross domestic product (GDP) growth reached 5.9% across various sectors, and national trade surpassed RM2 trillion for the first nine months.
“I congratulate the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) and the government on this commendable economic performance. I hope it will continue to improve,” Sultan Ibrahim said.
However, the King reminded the government to ensure that this strong economic performance benefits the entire population, not just certain groups.
“I therefore welcome the targeted subsidy approach as an effort to strengthen the government’s financial position. However, I urge that such subsidies be distributed efficiently and effectively, reaching only those who truly deserve them,” the King noted.

Sultan Ibrahim also commended the government’s efforts to attract foreign investment, particularly in high technology and digital industries, while urging that the government service system be upgraded to incorporate more efficient and transparent digital technology.
“This is to combat corruption, abuse of power, and the ‘red tape’ culture that complicates public affairs,” the King said.
Sultan Ibrahim expressed concern over the growing culture of slander and incitement online and on social media, which is causing confusion, hostility, and division among the people.
Thus, the King called on the government to take a firm stance against this culture, and be proactive in providing accurate and trusted information.
He also reminded the public to exercise caution online to avoid falling victim to cybercrimes, such as scams and identity theft.
Sultan Ibrahim also reminded members of Parliament (MPs) that the Dewan Rakyat is an honourable chamber for debating matters of public interest.
The King emphasised that the lower house of Parliament is not a place for shouting matches, hurling insults, or spreading slander. Instead, MPs should be the nation’s unifying force, not agents of division.
“As such, stop playing politics on every issue, and do not focus solely on your own party or group,” the King said.
Sultan Ibrahim acknowledged the role of all leaders in maintaining political stability, which has contributed to the country’s economic and social prosperity.
“I noticed that in last year’s parliamentary session, many members demonstrated a more respectful attitude. However, there are still a few who struggle to break old habits.
“I don’t need to name these individuals, as I believe every member is aware and knows how to uphold proper conduct,” the King noted.
