(Jan 7): A Seoul court has extended the arrest warrant for impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, after the lead investigating agency asked for additional time.

A joint probe team led by Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) requested an extension of the initial warrant after it expired on Monday, according to a text message from the team on Tuesday.

Last week, South Korea’s anti-corruption agency failed in its effort to take Yoon into custody after facing resistance from the president’s security team. The CIO is seeking to take Yoon into custody and question him for his botched martial law decree, which led to his impeachment. Yoon has repeatedly ignored CIO’s order to appear before the agency.

A Yoon’s lawyer said last week that the CIO doesn’t have the authority to investigate insurrection and that it’s trying to “forcefully execute” arrest and search warrants by mobilising police troops.
