KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 7): Port Klang, comprising Northport and Westports, has reportedly secured the 10th spot among the world’s busiest ports in 2024, according to Transport Minister Athony Loke Siew Fook.
While the official ranking is yet to be announced, the internal calculations conducted by the authorities confirm Port Klang's entry into the top 10 spots, Loke said at CGS International's 17th Annual Malaysia Corporate Day 2025 on Tuesday.
Port Klang was ranked 11th among the world's top 100 busiest container ports in 2023, up from 13th place in 2022, according to the rankings by Lloyd’s List.
In 2023, Port Klang handled a container throughput of 14.06 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 6.3% from the 13.22 million TEUs recorded in 2022. It handled 8.4 million TEUs in the first seven months of 2024, up 25.6% from the same period last year.
The Transport Ministry previously projected a 5.5% growth to 14.83 million TEUs for the whole of 2024.
“This year (2025), we are intensifying efforts to modernise and expand both Port Klang and the Port of Tanjung Pelepas [in Johor]. These upgrades will enhance our capacity, improve throughput, and position Malaysia as a pivotal regional trade hub,” Loke said in his keynote speech.
Early last year, the government announced plans to develop the third port in Port Klang. The new RM28 billion mega port in Carey Island, Selangor, will have an annual container throughput capacity of 30 million TEUs and is scheduled to be completed by 2060.
