KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 3): The Royal Malaysian Police is urging the public not to participate in any rallies, ahead of one planned next Monday to show support for jailed former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, following a statement issued by the National Palace.

In a statement, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain reiterated the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's prerogative under Article 42(1) and (2) of the Federal Constitution, saying any request for clemency must be submitted through the Pardons Board, not via public assemblies or unlawful channels.

"In respect of the royal statement issued by His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and to ensure public safety and order, PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) urges the public not to participate in any gatherings organised by any parties," Razarudin said.

"We urge all parties to uphold the principles of Rukun Negara, particularly the rule of law, and courtesy and morality, which are essential pillars of our nation's peace and prosperity," he added.

The IGP's statement follows a royal decree by the National Palace on Friday about the procedures for clemency applications. According to the palace, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong exercises his discretion to grant pardons with advice from the Pardons Board, which he chairs.

While no specific case was mentioned, the timing of these statements coincides with the hearing of Najib's appeal against the High Court's dismissal of his application for a judicial review at the Court of Appeal, scheduled next Monday (Jan 6), over an alleged royal addendum issued by the previous king that purportedly allowed Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

Umno plans to hold a rally on Monday, which will also be joined by PAS, to show solidarity to Najib. Despite criticism, Umno president and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was quoted on Thursday as saying that Umno will proceed with the pro-Najib rally.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, meanwhile, has said Pakatan Harapan is not involved in the solidarity rally.

Najib is currently serving a reduced six-year jail term and a RM50 million fine for charges linked to SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd. He had previously received a partial royal pardon last year, reducing his original 12-year sentence and RM210 million fine.
