Oct 10 — Former Special Actions Unit officer Azilah Hadri, who was convicted of murdering Altantuya Shaariibuu, being escorted by prison officers after his death sentence was changed to jail and caning following the abolition of mandatory capital punishment. This was a year after his convicted accomplice, Sirul Azhar Umar, was released from immigration detention in Australia, where he had been held after his asylum claim was rejected in 2019. Dec 23 — A birds-eye view of the 263.27-acre plot near Jalan Duta, which the High Court ruled the federal government should return to the liquidator of Semantan Estate Sdn Bhd following a legal dispute. The site, acquired by the government in 1956, houses buildings such as the Tun Razak hockey stadium, the Kuala Lumpur Shariah Court, the Inland Revenue Board building, and possibly portions of the Federal Territories mosque. June 12 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad arriving at the Legal Affairs Building in Putrajaya to attend the Royal Commission of Inquiry proceeding on Batu Puteh, Middle Rocks and South Ledge. The former prime minister was back in the spotlight after the RCI recommended a criminal probe be initiated against him concerning Malaysia’s move to not take action on the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) ruling that Pulau Batu Puteh belongs to Singapore. Separately, Lim lost his appeal involving a suit against The Star Media Group, and MCA vice president Tan Teik Cheng, over an opinion piece on an RM4 million allocation to a Chinese vernacular school in Johor during the 2022 Johor state polls. Sept 6 — Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, group managing director of Malaysia Aviation Group, telling reporters that the national carrier’s network reduction was to “ensure safe and reliable” travels after several of its flights experienced technical issues. The aviation industry globally, Malaysia Airlines included, was unable to fully capture the rebound in tourism as it faced the brunt of pandemic-induced supply chain issues with late and faulty parts affecting capacity.
