(Dec 20): Tencent Holdings Ltd and Honor Device Co will engage in a long-term strategic cooperation on cloud and artificial intelligence development, according to a statement on Friday.

China’s most valuable company will help Shenzhen neighbour Honor with its Tencent Cloud infrastructure, which will provide the backbone of Honor’s online services. The smartphone maker, which spun out from Huawei Technologies Co in 2020, is moving toward a public listing and this year sold stakes to China Mobile Ltd and China Telecom Corp in an expansion of its corporate partnerships.

As one of China’s top handful of device makers, Honor is among Tencent’s higher-profile cloud customers. It’ll use Tencent’s big data analytics and search tools, along with the two companies jointly creating a coding assistant to help Honor software engineers, according to the statement.

Tencent is competing to secure more business customers for its AI offerings, and this week its share price rose after a report it’s in discussions with Apple Inc around the use of its generative AI tools in iPhones.
