KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 20): Malaysia will launch a new generation of identity cards as part of efforts to combat identity fraud, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said.
The National Registration Department (NRD), the authority for civil registration in the country, is in the final stages of finalising the new structure of the identity card.
“This new generation of identity cards will replace the current version, which has been issued to the public since 2012,” Shamsul said during the oral question-and-answer session in Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday.
He said that the new identity card will feature enhanced security measures and incorporate the latest technological advancements to prevent forgery and misuse.
"It will be made of durable polycarbonate material and offer improved security features, including larger storage capacity to address forgery and data leakage issues."
In terms of design, the new identity card will have a more modern appearance, incorporating advanced elements such as laser engraving and holograms, which are expected to significantly reduce counterfeiting, Shamsul noted.
On cost, Shamsul said the NRD is conducting a market study to ensure implementation of the new identity card aligns with the principle of achieving the best value for money.
Meanwhile, Shamsul reported that the NRD conducted 2,103 enforcement operations nationwide between 2000 and the end of October this year.
From these operations, 519 individuals were arrested for committing offences under National Registration Regulations 1990.
“Of those arrested, 160 individuals were charged under Regulation 25(1)(e) for falsifying identity cards, while 30 were found in possession of identity cards belonging to others,” he said.
