KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 13): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his condolences following the passing of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, which occurred upon Anwar's arrival in Lima, Peru.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Anwar said: "May his soul be showered with mercy and placed among those who are faithful and righteous."

The PM also acknowledged Daim's contributions to the country, particularly during his tenure as finance minister.

“His services to Malaysia were recognised and valued by the government,” he added.

Daim, credited for steering Malaysia through two recessions and influencing the country's politics, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86.

In September, Daim’s wife Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid filed a police report following the publication of a Bloomberg article alleging that Anwar ordered Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki to investigate Daim.

Both the Prime Minister’s Office and the MACC have since refuted the allegations. Daim mostly served under former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who sacked Anwar in 1998.

Daim has also accused Anwar of pursuing “vendettas of the past” after he was charged in court in January. Both he and his wife were charged with failing to declare assets. They pleaded not guilty. The cases against Daim and Na’imah are ongoing.
