KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 11): The government is considering raising the ceiling price of local white rice as part of efforts to address the ongoing shortage in the market, said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.
The ceiling price for local white rice has been set at RM2.60 per kg since 2008 — a move aimed at ensuring the public can access rice at a reasonable price.
"At that time,(the floor price of paddy) was RM900 per tonne. Now it is RM1,300. Should the price of local white rice remain at RM2.60?" Mohamad said while concluding the debate on the Supply Bill 2025 in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.
The minister said based on feedback from industry players, the current ceiling price for local white rice is not competitive. Therefore, the ministry believes that reviewing the ceiling price is "logical".
He said discussions with stakeholders are ongoing, and that the Malaysia Competition Commission will soon present its report on cartel activities involving rice and paddy to the ministry.
"This report will be discussed by the Cabinet Committee on National Food Security Policy. The ministry hopes that reforms in the rice and paddy industry can be implemented comprehensively," he added.
Mohamad also said the government is considering standardising rice prices across all states, with a detailed study on new price adjustments expected to be finalised soon.
"This study aims to ensure stable rice prices nationwide and to help increase rice farmers' income fairly,” he added.
