BARCELONA (Nov 7): Malaysia is eyeing collaboration opportunities with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), which has an active and important role in developing high-performance computing in Spain and across Europe.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo expressed Malaysia’s interest in collaborating with BSC on Wednesday (Nov 6) during his visit to the centre, which is also well-known for its supercomputer research group for academia and industry.
He told Bernama that he was aware of the capabilities of high-performance computers in the exploration of new chips that can be used in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI (Gen AI) technologies, during the visit.
The digital minister is in Spain for a three-day working visit, and is also attending the Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC 2024).
“Apart from that, we also see the potential for discussion regarding the developing quantum technology.
“I think we should also start this discussion in Malaysia. So, for that reason, yesterday (Wednesday), I made a visit to BSC,” he said.
He said he is also looking to collaborate with several universities known to be interested in the development of quantum technology.
“I hope that moving forward, we can seal an agreement or understanding for this cooperation, which will lead to many benefits to boost our country, as well as from the point of view of cooperation between teaching institutions and so on,” he added.
The first quantum computer for public use in southern Europe is expected to be installed at BSC-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), and will be integrated into MareNostrum 5, which is the most powerful supercomputer in Spain and one of the most advanced in the world.
