The KLCC Group of Companies is a leading real estate company responsible for the two most iconic development projects in the nation’s history – Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) and Putrajaya, the nation’s federal administrative capital. Through these two projects, the Group established a new vision, and standards of urban and township development, introducing concepts of urban planning and infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and open spaces never seen before in the property development industry.
The KLCC Group’s development commitment to transform large swathes of precious land into non-revenue generating urban oasis like massive parks, water bodies and open spaces, and generous facilities for the comfort of its population changed how developers view value creation in their own projects. Still relevant after 25 years, the lush, Roberto Burle Marx-designed KLCC Park and the glittering Putrajaya Lake, as part of the Greater Kuala Lumpur, have remained the jewel of Malaysia’s urban landscape.
The KLCC Precinct and Putrajaya developed by the Group have become a source of national pride for Malaysians. They are the nation’s symbols of progress, resilience, and ambition. The two areas have economic impacts extending far beyond their physical presence, thus playing a vital role in shaping Kuala Lumpur’s growth, offering exciting residential, retail and hospitality offerings, attracting businesses, tourists, and investments. In doing so, it elevates our community of local professionals and workforce to world standards.
The KLCC Group has more than a 25-year testimony of designing, developing, and managing iconic and mega facilities. The Group has in its repertoire of capabilities – property development and investment, project management, facilities management, and provision of centralised district cooling.
Beyond the successful completion of the KLCC Precinct and Putrajaya, the KLCC Group continues its commitment to excellence. The facilities and buildings in the Group, are maintained by various entities with high standards of excellence. 25 years on, users of the spaces and facilities still enjoy a safe, secure, and pleasant environment. The Group instils commitment to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) in its operations and in the way they work, long before sustainability became mainstream. It is not surprising that the company is one of the real estate players that is more advanced in adopting a more comprehensive Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) agenda. One of the more exciting initiatives is the aim to make the KLCC Precinct as a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) hub.
In recognition of its achievements, the KLCC Group was recently awarded the prestigious Global Icon Award 2024 for the PETRONAS Twin Towers by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), making the Towers the second building in the world to have received the Global Icon Award by CTBUH after the Burj Khalifa.
The majestic PETRONAS Twin Towers is at the very heart of the KLCC Precinct. This iconic structure, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, continues to captivate and inspire, adapting to modern demands through the integration of sustainable features and advanced technologies. Today, this engineering marvel stands tall as a global icon of innovation and sustainability.
The PETRONAS Twin Towers, designed by Cesar Pelli, began its journey in 1999 when it officially opened, claiming the title of the world’s tallest buildings. This momentous achievement solidified the Towers’ place in architectural history. Even today, the instantly recognisable landmark remains the tallest twin towers in the world.
The PETRONAS Twin Towers is the recipient of various awards. In 2017, the Towers secured the Gold Award in the Non-strata Commercial category and the coveted Editor’s Choice Award for Iconic Innovation. In 2019, the Towers received the prestigious Green Building Index (GBI) Gold certification in recognition of numerous efforts to reduce the building’s carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency. That same year, it was named by the Malaysia Green Building Council as one of the Top 10 Green Buildings of the Decade. This year, the Towers received the Editor’s Choice Award for Timeless Elegance 2024 and the Gold Award for the 10 Years and Above — Non-strata Office category at The Edge Malaysia Best Managed & Sustainable Property Awards 2024.
“The success we have achieved today would not have been possible without the visions and aspirations of our past leaders,” said KLCC Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Md. Shah Mahmood. “The PETRONAS Twin Towers symbolises not only our achievements but also the values they hold for all Malaysians. As we move forward, it is through our collaborative efforts, impactful initiatives, and deep passion for progress that we will see continued success.”
As technological advancements change the way tall buildings are managed, the Towers has adapted to this new challenge in areas such as operations, facilities management, and energy efficiency. With the renewal of its GBI certification in 2024, the Towers reaffirms its commitment to innovative solutions and sustainable practices, further solidifying its position as leaders in tall building management.
The PETRONAS Twin Towers leverages on technological advancements through its Integrated Building Command and Control Centre (IBCC), powered by Internet of Things (IoT) technology that enables proactive monitoring and control of real-time operations where it prioritises safety through regular maintenance, building inspections, and even earthquake monitoring, while ensuring the highest security and convenience for its occupants.
The Towers also serves as a beacon of celebration, illuminating the city’s night sky with energy-efficient LED lights, exuding an aura of modernity and grandeur. In celebrations that have been held, the light shows that it has staged and evoked a sense of wonder, leaving an indelible impression.
Most importantly, the Group pays close attention to their customers and focuses on creating a positive environment for their tenants. The Workplace for Tomorrow initiative in the PETRONAS Twin Towers transformed the towers’ workspaces into areas that can promote collaboration and connectivity amongst the staff of the tenants, resulting in a higher generation of innovative ideas and improvement in productivity.
The prestigious Global Icon Award 2024 for the PETRONAS Twin Towers by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is indeed a wonderful prize for its Silver Jubilee.
