KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 22): Auto parts manufacturer Betamek Bhd (KL:BETA) has co-developed with Perodua an auto telematics system, which was unveiled at the Daihatsu Motor Co Ltd (DMC) exhibition in Osaka, Japan.
Betamek showcased the telematics system at the exhibition earlier on Tuesday, featuring over-the-air (OTA) software updates, which enables vehicles to receive the latest enhancements without needing physical service centre visits.
Telematics device collects data from a vehicle, ranging from GPS position to operation data such as driving speed, as well as on-board vehicle diagnostics.
“From remote vehicle management to real-time tracking, these innovations enhance safety, convenience, and performance. The ability to receive updates wirelessly through OTA technology ensures vehicles remain at the cutting edge without any hassle,” said Betamek executive director Muhammad Fauzi Abd Ghani in a statement.
Betamek’s telematics system offers a wide range of smart features, including remote vehicle control through a smartphone application. Drivers can lock and unlock doors, start the engine, and even adjust air conditioning settings through the convenience of their own phones, the statement read.
The system also includes real-time tracking and geo-fencing capabilities, allowing owners to monitor their vehicle’s location and set virtual boundaries with alerts if the vehicle moves outside the designated area.
In addition to these features, the system boasts accident alerts and an E-Call system that automatically notifies emergency services and family members in the event of a collision, ensuring timely assistance.
Betamek’s telematics system also supports smart charging management for electric vehicles (EVs), enabling users to schedule charging, locate charging stations, and monitor charging status — key features as the automotive industry continues its shift towards electrification.
“By developing and showcasing these cutting-edge telematics solutions, we are setting a new benchmark in vehicle intelligence and connectivity,” said Muhammad Fauzi.
“These innovations not only offer convenience but also deliver essential safety features that ensure peace of mind for drivers.”
The event on Tuesday marked the fourth edition of the DMC exhibition, a prestigious platform that was held annually before the Covid-19 pandemic. Betamek stands out at the DMC exhibition as the sole vendor to have participated in all four batches.
The telematics system technology is being developed by Betamek at a time when Perodua is working towards producing its first home-grown EV.
The national carmaker is expected to launch its first EV before the end of next year at a price tag below RM100,000, with the support of the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, its minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz was quoted as saying.
