KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 3): Varia Bhd (KL:VARIA), formerly known as Stella Holdings Bhd, has appointed Datuk Seri Mohd Nizom Sairi, the former chief executive officer and director general of the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), as its new independent and non-executive chairman.

Nizom, 61, replaces Datuk Mohamad Haslah Mohamad Amin, who stepped down on Jan 14 last year following a series of board resignations, to pursue other interests.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia on Thursday, the construction company said Nizom began his career with LHDN after graduating with a Bachelor of Science from Laurentian University, Canada, in 1985.

He went on to serve the tax agency for 38 years, including as director of the investigation department, director of the Malaysia Tax Academy, deputy CEO (management), deputy CEO (tax operations), and finally as CEO and director general. He retired in December 2023.

Nizom also currently serves on the board of another public-listed construction company, Jati Tinggi Group Bhd (KL:JTGROUP).

Varia's shares touched a high of RM1.06 on Aug 14 after securing a construction contract worth RM61.45 million in a related-party transaction. However, the stock saw a steep decline in early September. On Thursday, it closed unchanged at 82.5 sen, valuing the company at RM356.8 million.
