KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 27): Malaysia Aviation Group Bhd (MAG) has confirmed the appointment of Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid as its non-executive director effective Aug 12.

The Edge reported earlier on Tuesday that the former managing director of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) (KL:AIRPORT) is set to join the board of directors of MAG, the parent company of national carrier Malaysia Airlines Bhd. Bashir Ahmad will also join the board of Malaysia Airlines.

His appointment marks the eighth addition to MAG's board, which currently comprises its non-executive group chairman Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin, group managing director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail and five non-executive directors — Tan Sri Krishnan Tan Boon Seng, Cheryl Goh Ching Ling, Wong Shu Hsien, Datuk Zaiviji Ismail Abdullah and Faridah Bakar Ali. Adeline Khoo Suet Ling is an alternate director to Wong.

With over 50 years of experience in leadership roles in the aviation industry, Bashir Ahmad is one of the few executives who has worked at a senior level in every aspect of the industry, MAG said on its website.

"Bashir Ahmad had previously served Malaysia Airlines for 29 years, starting as a management trainee in 1972 and worked in various areas of the airline before becoming executive vice-president of the airline," it added.

From 2001 to 2003, he served as aviation adviser to the Ministry of Transport. He then went on to serve as the longest-serving managing director of MAHB from 2003 to 2014, and subsequently as its adviser until 2017.

"Bashir Ahmad was president of Airport Council International Asia-Pacific Region from 2010 to 2014. He was also a member of the Airport Council International World Governing Board from 2008 to 2014. Bashir has extensive experience across the aviation industry, including airlines, airports, and government agencies," said MAG.

Currently, Bashir Ahmad is the non-executive chairman of Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) — the wholly owned transit arm of the Ministry of Finance — since April 2023. He is also adviser to the GMR Airports group, which manages airports in India and overseas, since 2018.
