JAKARTA (July 15): Indonesian state coal miner PT Bukit Asam and state research agency BRIN launched a pilot project on Monday to convert coal into artificial graphite and anode sheet, components used to make lithium-ion batteries.

The resources-rich Indonesia aims to become a production hub for batteries and electric vehicles, mainly from its abundant nickel reserves the biggest in the world.

"The implementation of an anode sheet made from coal is the first in the world, so it could be an important breakthrough in coal processing," Bukit Asam chief executive Arsal Ismail said in a statement.

The technology could be implemented in EV batteries as well as other energy storage technology and electronics, the company said, adding commercial viability of the project may require further assessment.
