KUALA LUMPUR (July 11): Sime Darby Property Bhd (KL:SIMEPROP) and GSPARX Sdn Bhd, a solar solution provider and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Bhd (KL:TENAGA), have formed a joint venture to carry out rooftop solar projects across Sime Darby Property’s assets and developments.
According to a press statement on Thursday, the partnership will leverage Sime Darby Property’s portfolio and GSPARX’s expertise in delivering rooftop solar projects. The joint venture will focus on financing, developing and operating rooftop solar generation projects at Sime Darby Property’s asset portfolio and township.
Sime Darby Property group managing director Datuk Azmir Merican commented: “Climate change is one of the biggest global challenges, and as the nation’s pioneering property developer, we have a great responsibility to take the necessary actions to minimise our operations’ impact and emissions on the planet.
“The rooftop solar initiative is one of Sime Darby Property’s near-term strategies to reduce 40% of its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030 as the company transitions to renewable energy sources to power its operations and supply renewable energy to its commercial, industrial and residential clients within its townships,” Azmir added.
Meanwhile, GSPARX managing director Elmie Fairul Mahsuri said: “Partnering with Sime Darby Property enables us to expand our footprint in the rooftop solar sector, aligning with our mission to provide sustainable energy solutions. This joint venture is a significant step towards achieving the government’s renewable energy targets and demonstrates our dedication to advancing Malaysia’s green energy landscape.”
In the statement, 14 of Sime Darby Property's assets have been identified for the rooftop solar initiatives, which have the potential to generate up to 4.5 MegaWatts (MW) of solar capacity. In the long run, the partnership aims to expand its solar capacity to 20 MW in five years and 50 MW in 15 years.
