KUALA LUMPUR (June 21): Engineering and construction services group PJBumi Bhd (KL:PJBUMI) has bagged a contract to provide physical onboarding services for MyDigital ID, Malaysia's national digital identity (ID) system or platform under Mimos Bhd, a Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation agency.

In a bourse filing on Friday, PJBumi said its unit PJBumi Heavy Engineering & Services Sdn Bhd has accepted the letter of award for the contract from Mimos Semiconductor (M) Sdn Bhd.

The onboarding service is for 24 months and is expected to start on June 21, 2024 and last till June 20, 2026.

The contract price is RM100,000 for 500 units touch-point device setup, and RM1.70 for every successful physical onboarding to MyDigital ID.

According to news reports, the MyDigital ID initiative is used to verify and authenticate one's digital identity. It does not replace the MyKad but serves as an extension to verify Malaysians' identities online. So it acts like a single sign-on authentication for government services, and can only be enrolled on a single device, much like banking apps now.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was reported to be the first person in Malaysia to have a digital ID.

Last year, the government allocated RM80 million to Mimos to speed up the implementation of the digital ID and empower digital transformation as well as develop digital initiatives, specifically involving dealings with the government.

The platform is expected to be made available to the general public by July this year, according to Mimos chief techno-venture Dr Saat Shukri Embong last December, after it has been rolled out to Cabinet members, civil servants, and government beneficiaries like subsidy receivers.

He also said the information contained in the MyDigital ID app is very limited, offering no valuable information in case of theft.
