IPOH (May 30): A managing director of a real estate company, who was remanded by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Tuesday, was released from remand on Thursday.

Magistrate S Punitha made the ruling after the defendant's lawyer filed a request in the Magistrate's Court here.

A source said the suspect was released on bail amounting to RM50,000, with two sureties, and must report to the MACC office every month.

According to the source, the MACC arrested the suspect on Monday, after he appeared to record a statement at the Perak MACC office, as he was suspected of bribing a civil servant who worked at the land office in a state in the north of the country to change the status of Malay reserve land.

The source said this resulted in the land covering an area of approximately 649.2 hectares to be illegally transferred to non-Malay companies and individuals.

The suspect was then remanded from Tuesday.

Meanwhile, MACC senior director (investigations) Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim, when contacted, confirmed the matter.
