KUALA LUMPUR (May 23): Malayan Banking Bhd’s (KL:MAYBANK) digital banking platforms and debit card transactions were down for at least two hours from around 6pm on Thursday, according to customers who took their complaints to social media after being unable to access their accounts or conduct transactions.

Malaysia’s largest banking group by assets, meanwhile, confirmed the matter on its Facebook and X (formerly known as Twitter) accounts at 6.55pm. It said that most of its digital banking services and debit card transactions were temporarily unavailable and that it is working to resolve the matter as soon as possible.

The disruptions involved the bank’s Maybank2u website and mobile phone apps, including MAE, Maybank2u and Maybank2u Biz, as well as debit card transactions.

“We're currently undergoing a maintenance to improve your experience and will be back up shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience,” its MAE app showed.

However, the disruptions were rectified at around 8.11pm, according to Maybank’s social media post.

“Kindly be informed that you may now perform your transactions as usual. However, viewing your cards information is currently unavailable,” it said.

Maybank’s customers experienced the same disruption on the bank’s digital banking platform last month. The service outage also occurred about four times last year — twice in February and once in August and November.

Meanwhile, the service outage in April has prompted Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to query Maybank and its peers CIMB Group Holdings Bhd (KL:CIMB) to provide a thorough explanation for the service disruptions that have inconvenienced their customers.

The central bank, in a statement, said that it had asked the two banks to "provide a full explanation of the root cause leading to the incidents, as well as corrective and preventive measures undertaken to avoid a recurrence of similar issue".

Shares of Maybank, which hit an all-time high on Monday, closed unchanged at RM9.99 on Thursday, valuing the bank at RM120.73 billion.
