KUALA LUMPUR (April 25): Sports retailer Al-Ikhsan Sports Sdn Bhd, in which state-owned private equity firm Ekuiti Nasional Bhd (Ekuinas) owns a 35% stake, has appointed Datuk Hishammudin Hasan as its new chief executive officer effective April 17.

Hishamuddin, a 53-year-old Singaporean national, previously served as CEO of local sugar refiner Central Sugars Refinery Sdn Bhd (CSR) from 2018-2020 and convenience store chain operator 7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Bhd from 2017-2018.

“With nearly 30 years of experience across multinational corporations in diverse regions, Datuk Hishammudin brings a wealth of insights and leadership acumen to his new role,” Al-Ikhsan said in a statement.

Following the appointment, Al-Ikhsan said it is looking forward to leveraging Hishamuddin’s expertise and vision.

“Beyond corporate endeavours, Datuk Hishammudin is deeply committed to social causes, epitomising compassionate leadership through his involvement in initiatives supporting vulnerable communities,” the company said.

In May last year, Ekuinas CEO Syed Yasir Arafat Syed Abdul Kadir said the company was in early discussions to monetise its investments in Al-Ikhsan Sports via an initial public offering or trade sale, depending on its valuation.
