KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 8): Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called on all parties, including Tan Sri Mohamed Shafee Abdullah, lawyer for Datuk Seri Najib Razak, to respect the Federal Territories Pardons Board's (FTPB) announcement concerning the former prime minister's reduced jail time and fine, according to reports.

Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, confirmed Umno's intention to work towards obtaining a complete pardon for Najib, as requested by Najib and his family.

He stressed that the king, under Article 42(1) of the Federal Constitution, holds the power to issue pardons, necessitating everyone, including Najib's lawyer, to respect the decision as announced by the board.

On Feb 2, FTPB revealed a reduction in Najib's original 12-year sentence to six years and his fine of RM210 million to RM50 million, adding an extra year to his sentence upon failure of payment.

Shafee has indicated potential plans to launch another pardon petition for Najib, as he pointed out inconsistencies in the Pardons Board's press release about its role in Najib's commuted sentence.
