KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 14): MyEG Services Bhd said its concession providing foreign worker permit renewal services “had not been suspended since February of this year”, as it continued to face calls to reimburse employers that had paid upfront for its services.
It made the clarification in response to queries from Bursa Malaysia on the status of its contract with the Immigration Department amid allegations that this has been suspended.
In its filing, MyEG emphasised that it is company policy to refund its customers upon request, should its services be unsuccessfully rendered.
“MyEG strictly adheres to all the terms and conditions stipulated by the Government of Malaysia in relation to the provision of services, and accordingly, the collection of fees for foreign workers' permit renewal services is not being performed illegally,” it said.
“We wish to clarify that MyEG's concession service had not been suspended since February of this year,” it added.
The company has been in the spotlight after Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-DAP) alleged that MyEG has continued to take payments for its permit renewal service from employers.
This was despite its services having been suspended by the government since as early as February, Khoo alleged.
“After that, they waited and when the permits didn’t arrive, they went to the Immigration Department, which informed them that MyEG had been temporarily suspended and that their employer had to pay another RM20,000 to renew his employees’ permits,” Khoo told Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday.
“They already paid RM20,000 to MyEG, but MyEG doesn’t refund them, asking them to first show proof that they have paid and renewed their permits with the Immigration Department,” he added.
MyEG’s three-year concession for immigration-related services was scheduled to end on May 22 this year, following an extension from May 2020.
It is only two months later on July 10 when MyEG said it had received a notification letter dated July 4 from the Ministry of Home Affairs to confirm that the Ministry of Finance has agreed to an extension for the concession.
At the time, MyEG said the terms of the extension “will be finalised pursuant to further discussion with the government in due course”. An agreement to formalise the extension “will be signed at a later stage”, it said then.
The Edge has reached out to the Immigration Department for comment.
MyEG’s shares climbed half a sen or 0.64% to 78.5 sen, giving it a market capitalisation of RM5.83 billion.
